DEFINITION OF CROWDSOURCING
: the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, especially from the online community rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.
Hmm. Let's dig a little deeper...
The word itself is a combination of “crowd” and “outsourcing”. It is a co-creation project between business and crowd - in Volition's case, our community of real women.
HOW DOES VOLITION USE CROWDSOURCING?
Good question! We use crowdsourcing in two ways: 1.) our community innovators and 2.) our voting mechanism. In the 'old school' beauty model large companies decide what products to make without consulting the consumer until they are already made (think: post production focus groups). This fundamental disconnect leads to numerous products that - in our opinion- real people don’t actually want or need.
Naturally we wanted to shake things up.

Our voting mechanism works as a second layer to our crowdsourcing business model - not only do all of our products come from everyday people, they also have to be voted into production by the rest of the community before they're made!

FACT: Each product produced costs companies money.
So, when companies launch products that consumers don’t like, they lose money. To make up for this loss, they mark up other successful products costs (up to 90%). Even though the failed product launch mistake was made by brand execs, YOU are the one paying for it.
